The Sacrifice Support Group: A Dramatic Comedy for Lent
Jesus had a sense of humor, and he used it to teach serious lessons. So why not look at the tradition of giving something up for Lent through the lens of dramatic comedy?
The two-act play (20 minutes per act) titled “The Sacrifice Support Group” follows a mixed bag of characters who’ve been making self-serving sacrifices (yes, there is such a thing!) every Lent season for years, or else have dismissed the sacrifice tradition altogether.
Now they’re summoned by their pastor to consider a fresh approach to Lenten sacrifice: making sacrifices that really count for the glory of God and the welfare of their families or community.
The play can be put on as Readers Theatre with virtually no staging or rehearsal time.
It requires a cast of seven adults or older teens (1 male, 3 female, 3 either gender).
All characters but one stay seated throughout each act, making the play ideal for actors with limited mobility.
